President of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev met with the delegation from the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe

On 27 October 2021, President of the Supreme Court Ramiz Rzayev held a meeting with a delegation visiting our country led by the Director General of the Directorate General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe Christos Giakoumopoulos.
Expressing satisfaction with welcoming the Director General and members of the delegation to Azerbaijan, the President of the Supreme Court spoke about reforms in the judicial system under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. The President of the Supreme Court provided guests with detailed information about the work done to fulfill the obligations arising out of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, as well as the study and application of the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.
The President of the Supreme Court spoke about the recent implementation of the fundamental reforms in the judicial system in our country. These reforms covering a number of issues related to the activities of the cassation court should be considered as a qualitatively new stage in the development of justice in our country. According to the new reforms, the court of cassation starting from October of this year considers cases only in written proceedings save for exceptional cases. With the application of this rule, the Supreme Court will be able to organize its work more efficiently and function better as a court of law. The President of the Supreme Court emphasized the importance of expanding working relations with the institutions of the Council of Europe, as well as judicial cooperation between the member states of the Council of Europe.
Christos Giakoumopoulos praised the reforms in the judicial sphere, noted the great significance of relations between our country and the Council of Europe and the need to further develop these relations in the form of direct dialogue, which will contribute to the implementation of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights.
The meeting was held in the spirit of fruitful exchange of views and provided useful discussions on ensuring human rights and the tasks facing the judiciary in this area.
