Meeting with the representatives of the interstate group of the Council of Europe on a fight against corruption

The representatives of the interstate group of the Council of Europe on a fight against corruption (CREGO) met with judges of the Supreme Court, the Baku Appeal Court and the courts of the first instance in the Supreme Court of the Azerbaijan Republic on April 27, 2010. The international rules of law and contracts accepted by the states, also questions on application of the European Convention on a fight against corruption in national judicial administration have been discussed during the meeting.
Welcoming visitors, the chairman of Board of the Supreme Court on cases of military courts Mr. Shahin Yusifov noted that the European continental judicial system was applied in Azerbaijan. The International legal acts, in particular the provisions of the European Convention on “Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms”, and case law of the European Court of Human rights are studied in Azerbaijan. Accepted decisions are co-coordinated with the European standards.
The representative of the secretary of the group of the states of the Council of Europe on a fight against corruption Mr. Michael Jansen, the judge of general management on protection of criminal justice of the Ministry of Justice of Republic Italy Mr. Fabritsio Gandini, the head of department of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine on the anticorruption policy Mrs. Alain Smirnova, expressed their contentment with the activity of Azerbaijan on modernization of judicial system and said that Azerbaijan had seized new experience in this sphere. Influence of the international courts on case law judgements was highly appreciated.
Judges of the Supreme Court – Mr. Taptyg Makhmudov, Mr. Ilham Djafarov, Mr. Ali Seyfaliyev, judges of Appeal court – Mr. Rizvan Safarov, Mr. Gail Mamedov, Mr. Abid Abdinbekov answered the questions of the visitors.
Visitors were very impressed with the new office building of the Supreme Court. They also visited a historical museum of the Supreme Court and familiarized with working conditions of judges.
