Seminar on “Pretrial Detention In the Light of the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights” was Held in the Baku Court of Appeal.

The Department of Human Rights and Public Relations of The Supreme Court of Republic of Azerbaijan held a seminar on “Pretrial Detention In The Light of the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights” on May 24, 2014. The seminar participated by the judges of district (city) courts, appellate courts and the military courts was opened by the Chairman of the Criminal Board of The Supreme Court Shahin Yusifov. He spoke about the application of pretrial detention and announced statistical data about shortcomings found during generalization of judicial practice for the year 2012.

The judge of the Criminal Board of the Supreme Court Hafiz Nasibov spoke about “pretrial detention in the light of the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights” and analized the the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights against the Republic of Azerbaijan and the shortcomings in the application of the pretrial detention by the local courts. He gave proposals for the certain amendments to the Code of Criminal Procedure of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

In the Seminar the Chairman of the Criminal Board of the Baku Court of Appeal Rizvan Safarov and the Chairman of the Military Board of the Supreme Court Tapdiq Mahmudov shared their conclusions about the application of pretrial detention with the participants.

Shahin Yusifov answered participants’ questions.
